The Wolves is a highly acclaimed 2016 play by Sarah DeLappe. The Wolves, a girls’ indoor soccer team, practice drills as they prepare for a succession of games. As they warm up and talk about life, the girls navigate the politics of their personal lives as well as the politics of the larger world, gossiping about things like war, menstrual products, genocide, sports, pop culture, and their relationships. Each team member struggles to negotiate her individuality while being a part of a group.
Auditions will consist of reading from the script and learning/performing soccer drills/warm ups. Please dress comfortably & be prepared to move.
Director’s note: Memorization of sides is not required; however, due to the interesting nature of the script, I highly encourage auditionees to read through the materials in advance. Also, please do not let the script structure intimidate you, it appears more complex than it is.
We are looking to cast nine (9) youthful female-presenting actors to compose The Wolves, and one older female-presenting actor in the Soccer Mom role.
The roles of The Wolves will be physically taxing with a lot of potentially intense exercise including stretching, running, and soccer related drills.
- #11 – Midfield. Brainy, morbid, budding elitist, thoughtful.
- #25- Defense. Captain. Classic (ex)coach’s daughter.
- #13 – Midfield. Stoner, older pot dealer brother, into her wackiness.
- #46- Bench. New girl. Awkward, different. just wants to fit in.
- #2 – Defense. Innocent, unlucky, kind, skinny.
- #7 – Striker. Too cool for school. Sarcastic, thick eyeliner
- #14 – Midfield. #7’s insecure sidekick. Just switched to contacts.
- #8 – Defense. Childlike and determined to stay that way.
- #00 – Goalie. Intense performance anxiety, perfectionist, high achiever. See note below.
- Soccer Mom – Parent of one of the players. See note below.
Special Notes for 00 and Soccer Mom:
-Those auditioning for 00 should prepare 60 seconds of increasingly intense activity(think burpees, mountain climbers, and squat thrusts) ending in a primal scream.
-Those auditioning for Soccer Mom should prepare the section of the monologue included with the sides. This role only appears on stage for a very short period of time, but must exemplify mania and grief, sometimes meshing the two, to a very high degree.
