Southgate Community Players believes that theatre is for everyone. As a community theatre, we are committed to creating a welcoming, inclusive, and equitable environment both on and off the stage. We recognize that the power of storytelling is enriched by the diversity of voices and lived experiences that shape our community.
While SCP has a rich history in the Downriver area, we acknowledge that our past casting decisions included placing individuals in ethnic and racial roles in ways that were inappropriate and did not reflect the authenticity and respect those roles deserve. We understand the impact this has had on our community and recognize the need for greater cultural awareness and responsibility in our creative choices. Moving forward, we are committed to more thoughtful, inclusive, and equitable casting practices that honor the identities and stories being represented. We appreciate the feedback we’ve received and are dedicated to learning and doing better in all future productions.
We actively strive to reflect the full spectrum of identities, including race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, age, ability, religion, socioeconomic background, and more, through our programming, casting, leadership, and outreach. Our commitment to equity means we work to remove barriers to participation and ensure that everyone has access to the transformative power of theatre.
Inclusion is not just a goal; it is a guiding principle. We seek to amplify underrepresented voices, foster a culture of respect and learning, and hold ourselves accountable to ongoing growth and change.
We invite all individuals, whether seasoned performers or first-time audience members, to join us in creating a space where stories are told, differences are celebrated, and every person feels seen, heard, and valued.
